Water contaminants such as chlorine, hexavalent chromium,iron, rust, sediment, chloramine, or sulfur (“rotten egg”) odors are harmful to your health, skin and hair when you’re in the shower. It is the large amount of KDF that stops the hair from fading, turning orange or red. Some companies use large amounts of carbon to reduce the cost of the shower filter. Carbon does not work in hot water and will not stop bacteria or hair color problems but it does allow companies to sell cheap shower filters and make flat-out lying comparison sites which show their products as the best.
Filtration Technology
Why Not Carbon? FORGET CARBON IN A SHOWER FILTER!! Carbon-drinking filters are designed to filter tap water under conditions that are much different than found with shower water.
Temperature:
- The temperature of tap water ranges from 60- 75 degrees (F).
- Showering temperatures typically range from 85-105 degrees (F).
Carbon is a cold water filter. It is most effective at temperature ranges of 50-80 degrees (F). At higher temperatures, carbon becomes ineffective. It will "off-load" and release contaminants into the water. santé shower filtration media(KDF) was designed for hot water, becoming more efficient as the water temperature increases.
Flow Rate:
- The flow rate of most drinking water filters is less than 1/2 gallon per minute (GMP). Shower water flows at a minimum of 2.5 GPM (5 times greater).
Even using cold water, a minimum of 5 times the amount of carbon would be necessary to filter the shower water.
Volume:
- Most drinking filters produce 1-3 gallons per day (GPD). Shower usage ranges from 12.5-50 GPD (12 times greater).Even with cold water and a 5 times larger carbon filter, the filter would have to be an additional 12 times larger, or a total of 60 times the size of the original tap water filter. You don't shower in cold water and wouldn't use a 60 lb. shower filter. And we wouldn't cut a carbon filter in half and expect it to adequately filter shower water.

The number one phone call we receive is "MY HAIR IS TERRIBLE". HELP ME!!! WILL A SHOWER FILTER WORK? Yes it will if it is the correct one.
It is easy to be confused by the number of shower filters available. The best shower filters have KDF in them. (See below) Many companies use carbon in place of KDF or a small amount of KDF and lots of carbon. Carbon does not work in hot water. It does a good job in cold water, but not many people take cold showers. Chemicals in water can have a bad reaction with hair color and the pipes going to the shower interact with the water and with the hair color. The more KDF in the shower filter the better it will work. Cheap-low cost shower filters do not work for this problem. We have found that even if you place a filter where the water enters the house the problem still occurs. Water Pollution, contamination of water by foreign matter such as micro-organisms, chemicals, industrial or other wastes, or sewage. Such matter deteriorates the quality of the water and renders it unfit for its intended uses.
NH2Cl is a highly unstable compound in concentrated form. Pure NH2Cl decomposes violently above −40 degrees Celsius = 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Adding chloramine to the water supply can increase exposure to lead in drinking water, especially in areas with older housing; this exposure can result in increased lead levels in the bloodstream and can pose a significant health risk.
There is also evidence that exposure to chloramine can contribute to respiratory problems, including asthma, among swimmers. Respiratory problems related to chloramine exposure are common and prevalent among competitive swimmers. Chloramine use, together with chlorine dioxide, ozone, and ultraviolet, has been described as a public health concern and an example of the outcome of poorly implemented environmental regulation. These methods of disinfection decrease the formation of regulated byproducts, which has led to their widespread use. However, they can increase the formation of a number of unregulated cytotoxic and genotoxic byproducts, some of which pose greater health risks than the regulated chemicals, causing such diseases as cancer, kidney disease, thyroid damageand birth defects.
Many animals are sensitive to chloramine and it must be removed from water given to many animals in zoos. Aquarium owners remove the chloramine from their tap water because it is toxic to fish. Aging the water for a few days removes chlorine but not the more stable chloramine, which can be neutralized using products available at pet stores.

Ammonia may be present in drinking-water as a result of disinfection with chloramines.The presence of ammonia at higher than geogenic levels is an important indicator of faecal pollution . Taste and odour problems as well as decreased disinfection efficiency are to be expected if drinking-water containing more than 0.2 mg of ammonia per litre is chlorinated, as up to 68% of the chlorine may react with the ammonia and become unavailable for disinfection . Cement mortar used for coating the insides of water pipes may release considerable amounts of ammonia into drinking-water and compromise disinfection with chlorine . Monochloramine may be a by-product
of drinking-water chlorination, or it may be added to maintain residual disinfection activity in a potable water distribution system. It is recognized as a lesseffective disinfectant than chlorine. Chloramines are considered to have moderate biocidal activity against bacteria and low biocidal activity against viruses.
The presence of elevated ammonia levels in raw water may interfere with the operation of manganese-removal filters.

Water in thousands of D.C. homes might still be contaminated by lead, CDC says: Water suppliers may have unwittingly exacerbated the problem in 2000, when the Washington Aqueduct began to use the chemical chloramine, rather than chlorine, to purify the water supply. Although its use complied with federal requirements to reduce carcinogenic byproducts, many experts think it corroded pipes and caused lead to leach into the water.
Chloramine must also be removed from the water prior to use in kidney dialysis machines, as it would come in contact with the bloodstream across a permeable membrane.
Hexavalent chromium
Ion exchange (KDF) is the most frequently used treatment technology for chromium. This technology removes chromium ions from the aqueous phase by replacing them with the anion present in the ion exchange resin. As contaminated water is passed through the resin, contaminant ions are exchanged for other ions such as chlorides or hydroxides in the resin.
